Solar PV specific yield in Spain: kWh/kWp per year by province

By Atlascore · PVGIS data downloaded on 30 July 2026 · Updated: 9 September 2026

In short: a well-oriented kWp of solar panels produces between 1,113 and 1,700 kWh per year in Spain depending on the province, averaging 1,474 kWh/kWp. Almería reaches 1,623, Seville 1,584 and Madrid 1,560 kWh/kWp. The tables below give the annual figure, the month-by-month breakdown and the optimal tilt and azimuth for all 52 provinces, straight from the European Commission PVGIS database.

Annual yield by province (kWh/kWp)

Provinces are ranked by specific yield: the kWh produced per year for each kWp installed, at the tilt and azimuth PVGIS reports as optimal. It is the fair way to compare locations because it does not depend on system size. The next column shows what that means for a typical 5 kWp rooftop system. Azimuth follows the PVGIS convention: 0° is due south, negative is east of south.

Monthly yield by province (kWh/kWp per month)

The same data broken down by month. December and January are the limiting months for self-consumption in Spain: in the northern provinces a kWp produces around 59.6 kWh in December, roughly a quarter of what the same panel makes in July. Scroll the table sideways to see every month.

How these figures were calculated

Every row comes from a single query to the PVGIS v5.2 PVcalc endpoint of the European Commission Joint Research Centre, run once per province on 30 July 2026:

  • Location: the coordinates of each provincial capital. Output elsewhere in the same province varies slightly.
  • System: 5 kWp of crystalline silicon, building-mounted, with 14 % system losses. Per-kWp figures are that result divided by five.
  • Angles: optimalangles=1, so PVGIS returns the tilt and azimuth that maximise annual output at each site — the values in the last two columns.
  • Radiation: the PVGIS satellite-derived climate database, averaged over many years, so any single year can come in above or below these numbers.

These are modelled estimates for an unshaded array, not a measurement of your roof. To put your own consumption, tariff, battery and budget against them, use the solar simulator, which calls the same PVGIS API live and also runs in English.

Frequently asked questions

What is specific yield (kWh/kWp) and why compare provinces with it?

Specific yield is the electricity a photovoltaic system produces per year for each kWp of installed capacity, in kWh/kWp. Because it is normalised by system size, it compares locations rather than installations: a 5 kWp system in a place with 1,623 kWh/kWp produces about 8,115 kWh a year. Multiply the figure for your province by your own kWp to estimate annual production.

Which Spanish province has the highest solar yield?

Santa Cruz de Tenerife tops the table at about 1,700 kWh/kWp per year, and Biscay is lowest at about 1,113 kWh/kWp. The average across the 52 provinces is 1,474 kWh/kWp, so the best province yields roughly 53 % more per panel than the worst.

How much does 1 kWp produce per year in Almeria?

About 1,623 kWh/kWp per year at the optimal tilt (34°) and azimuth (0°, south), according to PVGIS calculated in the city of Almería. Month by month it runs from 115.4 kWh/kWp in December to 155.8 kWh/kWp in the best month of summer.

How much does 1 kWp produce per year in Seville?

About 1,584 kWh/kWp per year with optimal angles (34° tilt, 1° azimuth), from PVGIS data calculated in Seville. That works out at 7,919 kWh a year for a 5 kWp rooftop system, before any shading and beyond the 14 % system losses already applied.

Why is the monthly yield in December so much lower than in July?

Shorter days and a lower sun angle. Across Spain a kWp produces roughly 59.6–115.4 kWh in December against 110.4–171.6 kWh in July. The gap is far wider in the north than on the Mediterranean coast or the Canary Islands, which is why sizing a system on summer output alone overestimates winter self-consumption.

Are these figures what my own system will actually produce?

No. They are PVGIS estimates for an unshaded array at the optimal tilt and azimuth, with 14 % system losses, calculated at each provincial capital. Real output depends on shading, the actual orientation of your roof, module and inverter quality, temperature and soiling. Use them to compare locations and to sanity-check a quote, not as a guarantee.
